3 simple strategies for your Twitch channel

There’s a lot of old concepts in marketing and they’re really simple and still works. Sure we might need to twist them slightly to get a bit more out of it but that will only make them better today. Here are a few very simple ones that you can implement right away without having to plan anything in advance.

Use clear headlines

When I say headlines I mean anything from your titles on Twitch, VOD headlines, YouTube headlines, Twitter messages about your stream and more. There’s a bunch of different ways that streamers tend to name their streams.

We’ve all seen the clever puns and in jokes from big streamers… but we’ve also seen them from smaller streamers. It makes since that larger streamers or meme streamers go with this approach. A big streamer can do it to get their already accumulated followers and subscribers attention. It works since the in-joke or pun often is based around their community. However I can promise that even if it’s clever (don’t confuse clever with smart, they’re two different things) it won’t get them a large bump in new viewers or new followings. Remember that cleverness is often put opposite clearness, due cleverness is often far from clear. The meme streamers is sort of an exception but I’ll get to that later.

For a smaller streamer that don’t have large following or no following at all using an in-joke or a pun won’t really help you stand out nor will it help people understand your content or stream. If someone is browsing or searching for something they’re mostly likely not going search for your in-joke or specific pun (that’s often related to you).

A headlines is used to get attention and it’s supposed to be the relevant package for your content. The same way that you have different wrapping papers for Christmas and birthdays. If you see a birthday present on Christmas (and it’s not your birthday) you might not open it since… well… it’s for your birthday and not Christmas. The same way someone might ignore your content if the headline (package) isn’t relevant to what they’re looking for.

I said that meme streamers can get away with it and the reason for that is since a meme pun or meme in-joke is actually relevant to their stream. The question is for you if it’s relevant to your stream.

The usage of call to action

I’ve talked about Call to Action (CTA) before but let’s break it down to only a few lines.

CTA are often seen as advertisement or an infomercial but that dosen’t mean that they’re not effective. They don’t have to be as panels or on your overlay to be a CTA. A CTA is any time you tell someone to do something, be it to follow your channel, re-tweet something and so on, it simply tells someone what to do next. These needs to be specific and have a clear message to be the most effective.

This dosen’t mean you need to them everywhere you can fit them in. The more you use them (even in talking) the less effective they’ll be. If overused they’ll start to be a part of the noise and that’s not what you want. What you want is to capitalize on the attention from the content and the headlines to get attention to that one specific thing that is your goal.

Big ideas to instant communication

Every streamer, listen to Episode 82 of Dropped Frames, are on a hunt for that one big idea to set them apart. Even if they’ve already had it they know that getting there again will once again help them grow.

Our channels are that one big idea, however more often than not is this never shown. It’s not shown in the overlays, branding or as a communication throughout your entire online identity that’s related to your channel. A color change is also a mood change and that mood change won’t be noticed if all you’re doing is changing colors.

The soundbite might be “The world’s best streamer” but how is that communicated in the overall picture? How is it on Twitter? How is it in your overlays? The way you talk? The way your branding is aligned? When you have that big idea you need to communicate what’s important about it to your audience.

There we go 3 quick things that you can start doing right now. They’re not groundbreaking in anyway but they’re simple ways to get started on understanding marketing and after that a lot of things will start to click.
