Case Study: The Notorious BIC Twitch Branding

The Notorious BIC is a variety Twitch streamer and for this complete new Twitch branding I wanted to create something fresh, new and eye-catching without going over the top. It’s balance that we often see a lot of streamers struggle with and not being able to tackel in when it comes to the visual brand competitive market.


Me and BIC started to talk over and e-mail and this time around there wasn’t any possibility to talk over Skype or Discord so we kept communication over e-mail through out the entire process. Not having direct communication is always an advantage but that dosen’t make e-mail contact bad in any sense it’s just a bit slower to get a direct response.

BIC wanted to have something rather clean and sleek but still with a large portion of his personality in the Twitch branding. Until now he had been using something rather dated and leaning more towards the old MLG style. While not bad it also means that it lacks a lot of the the personality that signifies BIC. That’s what I wanted to lock into all the way down to the final piece.

As always the very first step we take to insure that we’re both on the same wavelength is the moodboard. The moodboard serves as a visual guide for both of us and makes it easier to communicate both what I got out from the initial konversation and allows them to see if that matches with what they have in mind.

I present the moodboard as a free space to talk about it openly. There’s no right or wrongs and there’s no right way of looking at it. It’s goes from what BIC felt, the mood he got and the overall style. That allows me to once again look into BIC’s brain to really get to the bottom of what he’s thinking. In this case there were a few question marks, and that’s not something unique, and after I’ve asked a few questions I explain each of my decisions and make adjustments according to the feedback.


After the moodboard have been talked about I move onto create a sketch for the illustration/avatar. This sets the blueprint for the entire project and is the center piece of any personal branding, this may differ depending on what type of project it is but in this case it’s a personal brand so it’s those steps that has to be taken.

I got a few reference images from BIC that I used when I started to sketch it all out. I prefer getting at least 3-4 different images from different angles since that allows for the best possible result. From those images I knew what style I wanted to use and keeping a rather unique and stylized and modern look. That might not come across in the  sketch and that makes sense since it’s a large leap between the two but all of that will make sense later.

The reason I bring that up is since that was actually something that me and BIC discussed over e-mail. He was worried that it didn’t have the right look and in this case I knew that it was a communication issue and not actually a style issue. While he sent over a more cartoon like example I explained that this style would have a more realistic look and mature look. This is were trust comes in and he gave me permission to actually execute on the vision that I knew would work.


As always I brought over the sketch from Photoshop to Illustrator. There’s a multitude of reason for it but mainly it’s so the tools and the fact that my style works the best with those tools. By using the pen tool I created the base shapes and from there the different facial feature. From that I went on to create the shadows and more details.

I created the same process for the chain and crown. By doing so we hit home with the whole The Notorious BIC as a play on The Notorious BIG. While that isn’t the main focus of the entire brand, and never was supposed to be, it’s instead used as a driving force and the rest of the brand strengthens the overall brand instead of just the play on words.

After talking with BIC I did change one thing and that was the shadows under the eyes. Since it was all created in layers and in Illustrator that change was easy to do and I sent over a new version to him to approve.


After BIC approved the illustration/avatar I moved on to creating a few pieces from the rest of the Twitch branding. I tend to do the offline card, starting card and a few Twitch panels. It gives the best overall idea of the entire look and feel so therefor it’s also what allowed BIC to see how the final product would look.

As you can see there’s a difference between the icons in the panels and the ones on the starting and offline card. The reason for that is since I created the Twitch panels after the cards. Another thing that needed to be changed was the B.I.C to BIC, since it was a term that BIC’s audience already used. Those two things was of course was changed for the final version.

All the panel icons were custom made in illustrator for this project. The concept was pretty straight forward and utilizing the circular deigns and gaps to further give each icon a further unique look. There’s a lot more that can be done with icons and panels but that’s something I’ve outlined before and won’t go into here.

Being able to create custom icons can really set you apart from other streamers. It shows that you’ve gone that extra step and it also give you a better overall Twitch branding.

Final version

Here you can see all of the parts of the final Twitch Branding for BIC. As you can see it fulfills what we set out to create from the start and standout on it’s own. It’s not overtly over the top but still eye-catching with strong colors and strong typography. You can also see that the new Twitch panel icons are in place now.

When you create solid Twitch branding for a streamer there’s a lot of things that needs to align the right way. When there’s so many moving parts that all has to have a consistent look but also not get boring and stale. This can be achieved the best way through understanding the person behind the brand and cross that with the ones that are going to experience it. The danger comes when there’s a disconnect between the two and that in turn can create confusion in the overall brand.

In this brand you can see that there’s a lot of elements that’s reused but in different ways and not only copied and pasted. They each have a thought and a process behind them to make it all stand out. From the smallest icon to the background used in each of the cards. Everything don’t, and shouldn’t, look exactly the same since that only creates something stale. What really makes it standout is that it constantly surprises you and uses the platform to determine what’s needed. For instance what works as a Twitch banner won’t work as a YouTube banner and what works as a break card might not always work as a starting screen. It’s more than changing the text and it’s more about understanding the space.
