Case study: Neewha Twitch Branding

featured-neewha

Neewha is one of those streamers that early caught on to a game. That game is Battlerite. It’s no secret when you’re a leading figure in a game you have a leg up in viewership and in the partnership queue. Of course it will depend on your value to the community around that game and later the relevance to your community towards the Twitch community. Done right and you can build a stable present and future for your Twitch channel. The first step is of course to go to LiveSpace to get your Twitch branding ready. This one is for the Neewha Twitch branding.

Of course it will depend on your value to the community around that game and later the relevance to your community towards the Twitch community. Done right and you can build a stable present and future for your Twitch channel. The first step is of course to go to LiveSpace to get your Twitch branding ready.

I even mentioned to Neewha that he was headed towards partnership. It wasn’t that I had some insider information it was obvious from the game and what he already had done in the Battlerite community. It was a question about honing on it and making it an advantage. Lo and behold Neewha actually gained Twitch partnership and CLG sponsorship while waiting to start working with me.

Brief

The aim for Neewha Twitch branding was to create a clean, modern and cool brand. The word cool was actually part of the driving idea behind the whole brand. Neewha wasn’t 100% sure what he wanted so using the LiveSpace process with with questions back and forth before the moodboard worked perfect. Even questions like “Do you like cool or warm?” is a question that will reveal a lot more than you might imagine.

Moodboard

Moodboard

With all of that in mind. I sent an initial moodboard that allowed me to gauge the direction that we should take the Neewha Twitch branding project. After the first moodboard we did another one since there was a things on the first moodboard that needed to be replaced.

As you can see in the moodboard there’s a lot of minimal and modern aspects. Even the avatar inspiration have a lot of modern aspects but enough to also be able to create something unique to the Neewha Twitch branding.

Sketch and Avatar

Neewha sketch

As always I start with sketching out what the avatar will look like. We did start with a mascot but pivoted over to a more personal avatar instead. It’s a much more future proof thing than a mascot. A mascot is also something that will develop over time and there’s no need to rush it.

As you can see it contains a lot of life and fun in the expression. This is something that I knew we wanted to have included. While the sketch does contain a lot of things it’s always easier to scale back rather than scale up.

To me sketches are quick things that you draw up after you find your inspiration. I rather focus on what’s next and that’s working on the style in Adobe Illustrator.

Here you can see the final style of the avatar. There were a few changes from the first version (not shown) to adjust the teeth and cheeks. It’s always easier to scale down rather than scale up so that worked out perfect.

You can also see that there’s a few differences from the sketch and the avatar. That’s why I don’t spend too much time on the sketching except getting down the most important details. I’ve used tiny details and highlights (instead of shadows) to get depth and a more unique look for the Neewha Twitch branding.

Preview

After the avatar have been approved I go over to create a few things that can be sent in a preview. This is done so the client can see the direction that I have in mind. These ideas aren’t made up from nothing. They’re combined from the first contact email, the interview and the moodboard creation.

As you can see there’s a lot of interesting things going on at once. Of course I’m using the big and large version of Twitch panels that I often talk about. This is to push focus on the most important things.

In the in-game overlay you have a custom CSS for the StreamLabs event listing. The icons are connected to my own server so there’s no need for the client to install the images themselves in the code. A streams job shouldn’t have to be Photoshop, coding and so on. It should all be focused on making the best channel in front of the camera. That’s why you come to someone like me instead of someone else.

On the starting screen you can see that I have a circular loading bar, box art, game name, a list and a regular countdown. All of these things are dynamic and I actually had no idea how they would work when I created this. The same goes for the event list but since I’m confident in my CSS skills and comfortable in understanding JavaScript coding I knew that finding the right parts and putting them together would work.

Final Neewha Twitch Branding

Here you have the complete package. Now of course this isn’t the only things that are included in a final package. It contains everything from HTML documents, PSD files, PNG files, vector files and even a step by step website that shows how to set countdowns and how to set it all up in StreamLabs and OBS. That dosen’t mean that it stops there. Even as I write this I’m helping Neewha to get everything setup correctly.

Being a LiveSpace client makes you part of a very selected few streamers. But I also try to give you the best possible experience and process that you can find among Twitch related designers.

You made the process very easy, even for someone uncreative like myself – Neewha

Dynamic Twitch overlay aspects

The box art and the game title is of course pulled from the Twitch API and dosen’t need any additional setup to make it work. The countdown and circular countdown are both JavaScript. They can be set with some simple addition to the code. I’ve moved the code to a separate file so it’s easier to edit.

Even the achievements list is a simple HTML document that allows Neewha to easily update it as he keep competing in Battlerite. There’s no need to go into Photoshop since each entry will add styling by itself.

Having these type of things can be pretty important for a esports personality, specially in a smaller game. The reason for that can show that you’re actually active in the community. It also shows that you’re someone that’s serious about what they do. Finally it gives you authority and that authority gives you attention. That attention in turn will allows you to grow, allow you to network easily and get you a step ahead of other similar streamers.

These projects are always super fun to work on. Modern design is exactly what I’ve specialized in. I also hope you had a great Christmas and that you’re getting ready for a new year of even better streams.
